Where: TBG Main Space 312 W 36th St (between 8th and 9th Avenue), 3rd floor New York City, New York

THE LEOPARD AND THE FOX- The acclaimed book The Leopard and The Fox by noted writer Tariq Ali has been adapted by Rajiv Joseph, an emerging new voice in South Asian playwrighting. The play follows the last days of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan's first popularly elected Prime Minister, betrayed by his closest confidante, his army chief General Zia Ul Haq, ousted and then executed in a power grab. Before he died he left his political legacy in the hands of Benazir Bhutto, who is as we speak preparing to return from exile, as the country's Prime Minister, to share power with Pakistan's unpopular military leader Pervez Musharraf. This timely play, under Joseph's deft language uncovers vividly the fissures that exist in a country between its powerful military establishment and an older guard with its political baggage, who have never followed through with their promises. In a prescient piece of timing, Benazir is returning to Pakistan on October 18th, a day before we open.

The Leopard and The Fox will be performed at: TBG Main Space, 312W, 36th St (between 8th and 9th Avenue), 3rd floor. Tickets are available at http://www.smarttix.com/show.aspx?showCode=LEO1 or at (212)-868-4444. General admission: $18.00 Contact : Shourin Roy Phone : 646-662-6057
Previously, Alter Ego produced A First Class Man, Who's Afraid of Vijay Tendulkar?, Fatwa, Indian Ink, Chaos Theory, and Hayavadana. Our most successful production to date — the New York premiere of Tom Stoppard's Indian Ink — ran at the Soho Repertory Theater from August 16, 2003 through September 7, 2003. It was a critical and popular success prompting us to extend it to a short Off-Broadway run and TheaterMania to list it under the 2003's category for "Shows You Should Have Seen But Probably Didn't".

Neighborhood: Lower East Side, 139 Norfolk Street, New York, NY 10002
In a city where bars and restaurants close constantly, Grand Opening came up with a way to circumvent the process. Every few months, the venue on 139 Norfolk St. closes and reopens as something new. A few months ago it was a single ping-pong table, an idea that proved to be so popular they probably could have kept the concept going permanently. But since mid-September, Grand Opening has been operating as DRV-IN, Manhattan's only drive-in movie theater. In a 1965 Ford Falcon convertible that seats up to six, patrons can watch classic films from the past four decades for $75 per film. There are two shows every night at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., and a full concession stand. Most of the films are already booked, but check back on the DRV-IN website http://www.139norfolk.com/ for additional screenings. This week, the flicks shift decades and celebrate the '70s.

4. Vampire Suit- The young New York-based Balkan Jazz Quntet (FREE)

Time: 9:00pmLocation: Tea Lounge (837 Union St, Park Slope)From an event blog- “Years back... back back back back when I was in college, I met the most fantastic violinist. He was the type of musician who made the violin transcend - for me at least - beyond all the classical music stereotypes I had harbored into an ephemeral, personal space. Tonight, Skye Steele, is joined by an equally genius group of the young New York jazz elite as Vampire Suit. Best described as Balkan New Jazz, this quintet draws inspiration from various musical settings and cultures including jazz, rock, Balkan music and African music. Tonight is a great chance to see them for free at one of the better underground jazz spots in the city. Put best, "If Bram Stoker's imaginary Transylvania had a jazz scene, the music might sound something like this. (Jazz Review)" Highly Recommended. Listen to Vampire Suit's Lullaby (mp3)

1. Raza: A Retrospective @ Saffronart (FREE)
Saffron: 595 Madison Ave., Ste 900, New York, NY 10022near 57th street
H. Raza’s works are not often exhibited in the US, which makes this comprehensive retrospective, featuring works pulled from private collections around the world, all the more significant. Something of a sub-continental Mondrian, considering his penchant for geometric shapes and his ability to command high prices, the 85-year-old painter has evolved a unique and easily identifiable style of mesmeric patterns that center around the ‘Bindu,’ a sacred Hindu symbol of cosmic unity. And like the lush canvases of Mark Rothko, whom Raza cites as an influence, these monumental works are both wildly colorful and oddly calming. Though lesser-known, the artist's unstudied landscapes of rural France (where he's lived for the last half century) prove equally captivating. 2. Film Screening- Anthony Hopkins’ Slpstream (Anthony Hopkins will be present)- FREE
Time: 6:15 p.m.
MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) New York, NY
Much celebrated as an actor, Anthony Hopkins is also a filmmaker of interest. Slipstream, his third directorial feature, plays with time and the idea of an actor playing a part. The careening narrative hops, skips, and jumps around a hot-tempered screenwriter who is working on a detective story featuring random acts of violence. Hopkins's propulsive riff on imagination and reality is at once amusing and enchantingly berserk. Slipstream is "about a man who remembers his future" (Hopkins), and at age sixty-nine the filmmaker, wondering what makes time so elusive, presents his viewers with a young and energetic work. Slipstream. 2007. USA. Anthony Hopkins. 96 min. New York premiere. Hopkins present.

American Masala takes the next step, marrying Indian flavors with American favorites to create dishes that are exotic, yet familiar; full of complex tastes, yet easy enough for weeknight suppers. http://suvirsaran.typepad.com/suvir/2007/10/american-masala.html#more

Suvir Saran, author of American Masala- book release and signing @ Barnes & Noble in Chelsea. 675, 6th Avenue, New York, NY 10010. Ph:212-727-1227. In Indian Home Cooking, Suvir Saran introduced our taste buds, and our kitchens, to the wonders of cumin, coriander, cardamom, and curry leaves. American Masala takes the next step, marrying Indian flavors with American favorites to create dishes that are exotic, yet familiar; full of complex tastes, yet easy enough for weeknight suppers. Masala—the Hindi word for a blend of spices—is at the heart of Indian cooking. Whether toasted, ground, fried, infused in oil, or fresh, spices are used to layer flavors in simple but profound ways. Bring the same techniques to American classics such as meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, or roasted turkey, and the result is something truly special. Masala also refers to the excitement and vibrancy that come from a house full of friends and family. Simple recipes prepared with staples found in every supermarket mean less time laboring in the kitchen and more time spent enjoying the spice of life.
From snacks and starters and on to the evening meal, the Indian influence brightens the flavors in dishes like:- Goat Cheese Pesto–Stuffed Chicken Breasts/- Tamarind-Glazed Turkey with Corn Bread–JalapeñoStuffing/- Crab-and-Salmon Cakes with Spicy Cilantro Aïoli/- Crispy Okra Salad/- Bombay-Style Whole Snapper/- Honey-Glazed Double-Thick Pork Chops/- Pistachio-and-Cardamom Pound Cake with Lemon Icing/- Fried Eggs with Asparagus and Prosciutto

IN THE FUTURE NO ONE WILL HAVE A PAST- An Art Exhibition!!!

A fascinating, vivid, controversial, contemporary paintings exhibit in the city from Oct. 12 to Nov. 17. Catch it if you're around! True to the artist's unique style, the exhibition in itself is divided in two parts, showing at two completely different locations. This dual-gallery show imitates his underlying two-pronged theme-"collisions of the foreign and the familiar-fragmented worlds!"

"His large-scale paintings of strange, disorienting interior spaces play with texture, pattern, and perspective. Raja has described them as “collisions of the foreign and the familiar.” He draws inspiration from the public, though often anonymous, interiors of hotels and airport lounges, as well as from the more intimate domains of bedrooms and family “rec” rooms. Although his paintings are empty of inhabitants, Raja fills them with resonant objects—crates of vinyl records, old exercise equipment, rifles, sneakers—that give clues as to who might reside in these fragmented worlds. " - From The Big Red and Shiny website.

Details: IN THE FUTURE NO ONE WILL HAVE A PAST
A solo exhibition in two parts by:KANISHKA RAJA
When: 12 October - 17 November 2007
Opening Reception: Friday, October 12 from 5 to 7 pm at Tilton and 7 to 9 pm at Envoy
Where: Location 1- Tilton Gallery: 8 East 76th Street (between Madison and Fifth Ave.)
Ph: 212 737 2221 Website: http://www.jacktiltongallery.com/
Location 2- Envoy: 131 Chrystie street (between Broome and Delancey)
Ph: 212 226 4555
A New York magazine post on the exhibit: http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/art_candy/
From the event website: "Kanishka Raja's unique blend of pattern and decoration, Op Art and Indian miniature, doubles, mirrors, multiplies and samples a curriculum of surfaces to create complex psychological interiors. Anonymous airport lounges present a world void of inhabitants, yet they are suffused with mysterious signs of human occupation such as tents and army cots, the occasional Playstation or flat screen TV. It has always been a fundamental aspect of the artist's work to explore the collision between traditions of Western perspectival space and the particular conventions of pictorial design in Indian miniature painting. Raja takes his cues from the pre-Renaissance idea of rendering space by collapsing and compressing perspective, an idea which is also explored invideogames. He builds on this information, not just in how spaces are stacked, but also in how things operate inside and outside a frame and how elements from one painting spill over into another as part of the larger continuum.
Raja's current cycle of paintings prominently feature a geometrical pattern that is derived from a photograph of a window grill from the Babri Masjid, a 16th century mosque in Ayodhya, India that was destroyed by Hindu fundamentalists in December 1992. The nationwide riots and bloody reprisals that followed the destruction, culminated in March 1993 when in one morning, 13 bombs ripped through the heart of Bombay. By using the Babri Masjid pattern throughout the work, it becomes the essence of repetition and allows Raja to emphasize historical repetition as well as our persistent political and cultural amnesia. He takes this even further by creating wallpaper from a drawing whose pattern is generated from images of the destruction after the Bombay attacks.
As in Raja's earlier work, the iconography of the airport continues to operate as the quintessential liminal space: the place of arrival and departure. By unfolding the images in a panoramic format he develops a narrative that unfolds in time. This allows for a circularity that becomes the structural metaphor for the ideas of repetition, the idea of reflection, showing that what is in front of us is exactly what is behind us."

Inspired by recordings of the late great Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Brooklyn Qawwali Party was founded by Brook Martinez in 2004 as an experiment. What would happen if New York jazz musicians were to play and improvise around the melodies of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan? From this idea, Brooklyn Qawwali Party was born.
