New York City is headquarters of Alwan For The Arts, a creative arts organization that promotes Middle Eastern culture and art, serving NY's large and diverse Arab community. They organize a range of cross-cultural and artistic events around the years promoting the diverse cultures of the Arab countries in NYC.
On Saturday, June 2, 2007 at 9:00 PM Alwan invites you to yet another unique LIVE music event: Rhythms of the Maghreb with Najib Bahri (part of their Percussion Solo Series). Tickets are $15 ($10 with Student ID)
The performance will include:
Tareq Abboushi (Buzuq and Percussion)
Taoufiq Ben Amor (Vocals, Oud and Percussion)
Ramzi Elidlibi (Tabla, Riq, Daf and Dance) and
Najid Bahri, who started playing at the age of 8, is a sort of master-of-all-trades. He is a master percussionist on
Darbouka (goblet drum). But he also plays the Bendir (frame drum), and Riq (Arabic tambourine) in the Maghrebi, Mashriqi and Khaligi classical and folk styles. After finishing college in France, he performed at various Parisian nightclubs and other hotspots. He's played with some of the Arab world's most well-known musicians including Egyptian violinist Aboud Abdel Al, Lebanese singer and composer Wadi'h Essafi, Lebanese composer George Yazbek, Egyptian cellist Mahmoud Ramzi, master oud player Ali Sriti, and Egyptian violinist Ahmed Hafnawi. He also leads the group El Amal (Arabic for "Hope") which plays classical and contemporary North African and Middle Eastern music. Read more about Bahri here:
